Chapter 5 of 8

Depths of Despair

4 min read · 709 words

In the dimly lit depths of the Kola Superdeep Borehole, the group huddled, casting anxious glances around the enclosed space where the echoing taps still resonated. The air was thick with humidity, and a palpable fear clung to each of them as they awaited any sign of Eddie's return.

Pedro, trying to maintain order, found it increasingly difficult to keep his voice even. "We need to stay calm. Eddie knows what he's doing," he said, his gaze flitting between the faces of his friends, who looked to him for reassurance.

Zain, his usually jocular demeanor dimmed, clutched a makeshift weapon—a piece of sharp rock. "What if that thing got him, man? We should never have come down here," he muttered, the vulnerability behind his words more naked than any of them had ever seen.

Becky, ever the survivor, paced back and forth, her athletic form tense with pent-up energy. "We can’t just wait here. We need a plan. If Eddie doesn’t show up soon, we need to move," she insisted, her voice a sharp contrast to the soft dripping of water from the cavern walls.

Ava, who had been quiet, spoke up, her voice shaky. "Maybe we can find another way out, there has to be more than one path in these caverns," she suggested, desperately scanning their maps and notes on her digital tablet.

The group’s frayed nerves were evident as they argued about the next steps. Pedro tried to guide the discussion, but his usual methodical approach was hampered by the urgency of their situation. Becky was the first to snap.

"We don’t have time for this!" she exclaimed, her impulsive nature taking over. "I’m going to scout ahead. I'll be faster alone."

"Becky, wait!" Ava cried, but Becky was already disappearing into a narrow offshoot of the cavern. Ava turned to Pedro and Zain with a pleading look. "Go after her, please. It’s too dangerous to be alone right now."

Pedro nodded, his protective instincts kicking in. He and Zain hurried after Becky, leaving Ava alone in the echoing chamber. As the two men navigated the slippery rocks and tight spaces, the oppressive silence of the borehole bore down on them, interrupted only by their heavy breathing and the distant, eerie sound of water moving somewhere in the darkness.

They found Becky crouched by a small pool of water, staring at something in the depths. "Look at this," she whispered urgently as they approached. Floating in the water was Eddie’s camera, its light blinking weakly.

"Eddie must have dropped this," Zain said, a trace of hope flickering in his eyes.

Pedro picked it up carefully, examining it. "There’s a recording. Maybe it'll show us what happened." His fingers fumbled in the dim light as he pressed play.

The screen flickered to life, showing Eddie's last moments before he turned the camera toward the water. They saw through the lens as a shadow moved rapidly towards Eddie, the video ending abruptly with a splash.

The silence that followed was suffocating. Pedro clenched the device in his hand, his usual composure slipping. "We need to make a decision now," he said firmly, looking between Zain and Becky. "We find another way out, or we go back and help Eddie—if he’s still alive."

Before they could respond, a low growl echoed through the cavern, freezing them in place. The sound was closer this time, a stark reminder of the predatory creature lurking in the shadows.

"Back to Ava, now!" Pedro commanded, the urgency clear in his voice.

They retraced their steps, the fear of the unknown propelling them forward. As they neared the chamber where they had left Ava, they heard her scream—a sharp, terrifying sound that cut through the stifling air.

Bursting into the chamber, they found Ava backed against the wall, her tablet dropped and forgotten on the ground. Before her stood a creature, unlike anything they had ever seen—its eyes glinted in the artificial light, and its teeth bared as it advanced.

"Run!" Ava cried, but it was too late. The creature leaped, and the group scattered, diving away in a desperate bid to escape. The chapter closes as they find themselves separated in the darkness, each member of the group isolated and facing the unknown.
