Below the Surface

The clamor of tropical birds and the relentless buzz of insects hovered in the hot, sticky air as Pedro wiped sweat from his brow. His fingers brushed against the crumbling "DANGER" sign that barred the entrance to the Kola Superdeep Borehole. Beside him, Eddie Zhu fiddled with a high-tech camera, preparing to capture their descent into the depths for millions of online followers.
"Man, the heat here never quits," Zain joked, stripping off his sweat-soaked shirt, revealing a torso sculpted from relentless gym sessions. "What's a little danger compared to our daily workouts, right?" His grin was infectious, but a glance towards Becky showed her focus was elsewhere, her eyes scanning the structure for weaknesses.
Ava, loaded with her backpack full of gear and gadgets, approached the borehole's opening, her eyes wide with curiosity. "Can you imagine what's down there? It's like Earth's keep of secrets!" she exclaimed, her voice echoing slightly against the metal entryway.
Pedro, ever the protector and peacemaker, clapped his hands together, drawing everyone’s attention. "Okay, team, let's remember why we're here. This isn't just about thrill-seeking. We have a chance to really learn something, to share something special with the world."
Eddie, leaning against a rusted rail, smirked. "And let’s not forget the views, huh? The deeper we go, the higher those numbers climb. You ready to make history, Pedro?"
Pedro nodded, though his stomach churned with a mix of anticipation and anxiety. He was here to make a difference, to bring value back to his community, not just to chase views. But with Eddie funding the expedition, it was a delicate balance.
Without further ado, they bypassed the weathered warning signs and ventured into the borehole. The air grew cooler as they descended, the sounds of the jungle fading into a hollow silence that was punctuated only by the crunch of their boots on gravel and the occasional drip of water from the borehole's walls.
The deeper they traveled, the walls closed in, damp and slick with condensation. Lights mounted on their helmets pierced the darkness, casting long, eerie shadows. Ava’s voice bubbled with excitement as she pointed out rock formations and speculated about the geological history of the place.
Pedro remained alert, his eyes constantly scanning the path ahead and behind. The weight of responsibility pressed down on him—he couldn’t let anything happen to this makeshift family of his.
Suddenly, Becky, who’d taken the lead with her athletic stride, halted. "Do you hear that?" she whispered. The group stopped, the silence swallowing up their breaths. A distant rumbling sound, like thunder, rolled through the borehole.
"It’s just the Earth settling," Eddie said with a dismissive wave of his hand as he checked his expensive watch, a tiny frown creasing his brow. "We should keep moving."
But Becky was unconvinced. "No, it's getting louder. We need to—"
Before she could finish, the ground beneath them shuddered violently. A deep, booming crack echoed up from the depths, sending a shiver through the air. Screams mingled with the sudden roar of earth as the floor trembled and split. Pedro reached out, grabbing Ava as she stumbled, his other hand reaching for anyone else he could stabilize.
The rumbling subsided as quickly as it had begun, leaving a heavy silence hanging amongst the fading echoes of their shouts. Pedro’s heart pounded against his ribs, the taste of dust and fear thick in his mouth.
"We need to turn back," Becky said firmly, her voice cutting through the stunned murmurs.
Eddie, however, straightened up, brushing dust from his clothes. "And miss the chance to see what caused that? This is what we came for, the unknown, the—"
"Risks?" Zain finished Eddie's sentence, his usual jovial tone edged with concern.
Pedro looked at each of his companions, their faces illuminated by the shaky light of their helmets. They were here because of him, their safety his burden. And yet, the lure of the unknown whispered seductively in the shadows.
As they weighed their options, a new sound emerged from deeper within the borehole—a soft, eerie wail that seemed both human and otherworldly, pulling them irresistibly forward into the darkness.
