Chapter 7 of 8
Ascent to Reality

The tropical heat of the Kola Superdeep Borehole bore down on the group as they made their arduous climb towards the surface. The damp earth emitted a heavy, musky scent, blending with the stench of fear and determination that clung to each member. Pedro led the way, his broad shoulders parting the dense foliage that tried to reclaim the narrow pathway.
As the dim light from the borehole’s entrance beckoned from above, Zain cracked a nervous joke, trying to lighten the mood, but the laughter died quickly in their throats. The tremors had weakened the structure around them, loose rocks and debris threatening their every step. Pedro, ever the protector, kept a vigilant eye on the group, particularly on Ava, who seemed lost in thought, occasionally tripping over unseen roots.
Ava, absorbed in her observations, had barely noticed the changes in the environment. The flora seemed subtly different - less vibrant, as if a shadow had passed over the sun. Her mind raced, trying to connect the dots between the changes in the ecosystem and the artifacts they had discovered.
Suddenly, Becky, who had taken the rear, let out a sharp cry as her foot slipped into a crack. The group halted, hearts pounding. Pedro and Eddie rushed to her side, pulling her up. Her ankle was sprained, but she gritted her teeth and nodded that she could move. Their ascent resumed, with Eddie offering Becky a supportive arm, his previous confidence shaken by the weight of their experience.
The closer they got to the entrance, the louder the sounds of the outside world grew. They emerged from the borehole to find the sky overcast, the thick clouds hanging low as if to press them back into the earth. The air felt different - heavier, charged with an electric tension that made the hair on their arms stand.
Pedro looked around, his eyes scanning the horizon. “Something’s off,” he murmured, more to himself than to the others. The usual chirping of tropical birds was absent, and there was a strange stillness that unnerved him.
Eddie, pulling out his phone to check for signals, frowned. “There’s no service. That’s impossible.” He attempted to reassure himself and the others, but his voice wavered with uncertainty.
They decided to trek back to the base camp, hoping for answers. As they walked, the undercurrent of dread grew stronger with every step. Shadows seemed to loom larger, and every rustle in the underbrush was a cause for alarm.
Ava finally broke her silence, her voice barely above a whisper. “Do you think we caused this? By disturbing the artifacts?”
Zain scoffed, his usual bravado dimmed. “What, like some ancient curse? Come on, Ava.”
But Becky, limping slightly beside Eddie, interjected, her tone serious. "It's not about curses. It's about balance. We took something that wasn't ours to take."
The conversation halted as they reached the base camp, only to find it abandoned, the tents slashed and supplies scattered. A cold fear settled over the group as they realized they were not alone. The sense of isolation was palpable, the silence a heavy cloak around them.
Pedro, ever the rock of the group, stepped forward, his voice firm. “We need to stick together. Let’s find out what happened here, then make a plan.”
As they began to regroup and search the area, a low growl echoed through the trees, a sound none of them could identify, but one that filled their hearts with ice. Shadows moved just beyond the edge of their vision, hinting at unseen dangers lurking just out of sight.
The chapter closes with the group huddled together, facing the unknown threats of a seemingly altered world, their previous discoveries casting long shadows over their fate.
